What Fathers Do For Us
Do you think you can survive without your father? Elie could not have survived as long as he did without his father being alive with him. Having his father trhough most of The Holocaust increased elies chances of surviving, first Elie’s dad left his treasures with him, next Elie would have fallen asleep in the snow, lastly his father saved his life in the cattle car.
When Elie’s father belived he was on the verge of dying he was giving Elie what he believed would help him survive and what he had kept with him and made himself feel secure, Elie’s dad had been written down for selection and he was so scrawny and weak looking that he believed he would not make it through the selection. When elie and his father met up again he tried to give him a knife and spoon, which he felt would be useful in the future. “My inheritance…” (Wiesel 75). His father giving him the ingeritance gave him a better chance at survival. With the knife he could easily cut another inmate who tried to ruff him up and push him around. He can use the spoon to dig and hide something he finds of value or just use it to eat. The fact Elie was trusted with such things of which gave his father a sence of security showed his father really cared and wanted his son to live longer than he could be there to see.
He would have fallen asleep in the snow but his father woke him up keeping him from sleeping forever. They marched for another hour and were finally allowed to stop, Elie tried to rest in the snow where he was standing but his father did not wish for him to stay out in the open. His father made him walk to a nearby shed wgere he once again fell into the snow to sleep and this time he did, but once again his dad had stopped him from resting (Wiesel 88). If Elie’s father had not been there for him from the beginning till near the end he would have first fallen asleep in the snow and that would have been the end of Elie all together. We would know nothing of The Holocaust from Elie’s perspective because E;oe would have been long gone. Elie’s father helped us in many ways of understanding how horrible The Holocaust was. Without Elie’s dad being alive and keeping him alive we would never have had the insight we have now even though it is not a pretty picture to think about we need to know the trust and Elie has given us that with the help and loyalty of his father.
Elie’s dad savede his life in the cattle car. One night while in the cattle cars Elie had awoken to a stranger strangling him he had enough breat to call his father to his aid. His father appeared and pulled on the stranger with not much success and called for help. “In a few moments, I was freed” (Wiesel 102). Once again if Elie’s father had not been there his life would have been ended short, He would have been strangled to death in the night and no one would have cared or known how he died his death would just mean more room for the rest of them. Elie would have been just another lifeless body under all the snow. His dad was always there for him no matter how weak and tired he was he would not give up on life because he not only had to think of his life but his sons also.
This is why having his father through most of The Holocaust increased his chances of survival.
